W&L Women's Basketball Runs Away From Bridgewater, 71-45

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee used a 45-16 run across both halves to run away to a 71-45 win over Bridgewater in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday at the Warner Center.

The Eagles (3-4, 0-2) held a 23-15 lead at the 7:11 mark of the first half following a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jessica Lam (Elkton, Va. / East Rockingham).  The Generals (5-1, 1-1) then outscored BC 15-6 for the remainder of the half, sparked by six points from first-year guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale), to assume a 30-29 lead at the break.

W&L's dominating run continued after the break, outscoring the Eagles 11-2 in the opening 3:11 of the second half to push out to a 10-point lead (41-31) at the 16:49 mark.  Sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) scored seven of the 11 points during the stretch.

Bridgewater followed with a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Heather Cantrell (Singers Glen, Va. / Broadway) at 16:31, but the Eagles would not score again until the 11:05 mark as the lead swelled to 14 points (47-33).  The Eagles cut it to single-digits (47-39) after a triple by junior guard Jessi Strom (Salem, Va. / Glenvar) at the 9:01 mark, but W&L scored the next 13 points, including nine from Clifford to push out to a 60-39 lead with 5:30 left.  BC scored just six points the rest of the way as W&L won its first ODAC contest of the season.

After shooting just 36.7 percent (11-30) in the first half, W&L heated up to 53.6 percent (15-28) in the second half while holding the Eagles to just 5-of-22 (.227) from the field in the final 20 minutes.  The Generals also held a 44-30 advantage on the boards.

Clifford paced W&L with a career-high 27 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line.  She also grabbed six rebounds.  Junior forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) totaled 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Perszyk notched eight points.  First-year forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) chipped in four points, a game-high nine rebounds and three blocks.

Bridgewater was led by Cantell's 12 points and 10 points from Lam.
