FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has released its 2013 Women's Basketball Preseason Poll and Washington and Lee was selected to finish 11th in voting among the league's coaches.
Eastern Mennonite received six first-place votes and 116 total points on its way to the top ranking. Guilford sits second after collecting 112 markers, including four top nods. Lynchburg garnered the remaining two first-place votes and 102 total points to place third, while Virginia Wesleyan (87) and Randolph-Macon (77) wrapped up the Top 5. Bridgewater (67), Roanoke (65), Shenandoah (58), Emory & Henry (34), Randolph (33), W&L (23) and Hollins (18) rounded out the poll results.
The Generals return six players and two starters from the 2012-13 team that went 9-16 overall and 6-10 in conference action. W&L advanced to the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals, where it fell to Eastern Mennonite, 68-58.
Sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) and sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) come back as the top two returning scorers from a season ago. Corvino started all 25 games, averaging 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Hendricks tallied 6.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while appearing in 24 contests with three starts. Junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) also returns for the Generals. Last season, Gauf led the team with 3.4 assists per game and also posted 4.5 points per game.
The Generals' roster will feature 12 members, including five first-years, under the direction of second-year head coach Christine Clancy.
W&L kicks off its season on Saturday, November 16, when it hosts Meredith as part of the W&L Tip-Off Tournament. Action is set to start at 6 pm.
