LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team held Randolph to 36.8 percent shooting (25-68) from the field, but it wasn't enough as the Generals fell to the WildCats, 69-64, in overtime on Thursday evening at the Warner Center.
With W&L leading, 54-48, with 2:40 left on the clock, sophomore guard Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C. / Asheboro) scored six consecutive points over a 1:42 span to tie the game (54-54) with 58 seconds left to play.
A layup by junior guard Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, Va. / Henrico) at the 32-second mark gave the WildCats the lead (56-54), but sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) pulled in an offensive rebound and nailed a jumper with five seconds on the clock to force overtime.
Bullins opened the overtime period with her second three of the game to give the WildCats a 59-56 advantage with 4:45 left to play. The Generals would take the lead back (62-61) at the 2:57 mark after a jumper by sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School). However, Randolph held the Blue and White to 1-of-7 shooting down the stretch and got seven consecutive points from Bullins to claim the season sweep.
For the game, the Generals out-rebounded the WildCats, 50-41, including an 18-11 edge on the offensive boards. W&L shot 36.1 percent (26-72) from the field, while Randolph made 25-of-68 shots from the floor for a 36.8 shooting percentage.
Vick paced the Generals with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Corvino added 11 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) notched 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) recorded nine points and six rebounds.
Bullins led all scorers with a game-high 31 points on 10-of-21 shooting. She was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line. Junior forward Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, Va. / Central) was the only other WildCat in double-digits, as she finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va. / Brookville) chipped in nine points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists.
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Guilford for a 2:00 pm contest.
