Hollins Holds off W&L Women's Basketball, 66-64

HOLLINS, Va. – Hollins first-year guard Taylor Catron broke a 55-55 tie with 6:05 remaining by scoring five straight points as Hollins held off Washington and Lee, 66-64, in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team led by more than six points in the second half until Catron ignited an 8-0 run that gave HU a 63-55 lead with 3:34 left in the contest.  The Generals (5-13, 3-7) responded with a 7-0 run that included a three-pointer from junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) that cut it to a one-point game (63-62) with 1:47 remaining.

Hollins (6-13, 1-9) stretched back out to a 65-62 lead following a pair of free throws by senior center Chanci Wright with 1:15 left, but first-year guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) drilled two of her own to make it a 65-64 game with 20 seconds remaining.  Clifford then fouled Hollins' first-year guard Jewell Parfitt with 15 seconds remaining, sending her to the line for a 1-and-1.  Parfitt missed and sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) grabbed the rebound, but was called for a charge six seconds later.

A foul by sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) sent Wright back to the line for two shots.  She missed the first and made the second, giving HU a 66-64 lead with seven seconds remaining.  Gauf missed at the buzzer giving Hollins its sixth-straight win over W&L, including earlier this season.

HU led by as many as seven points (26-19) in the first half, but the Generals went 9-for-10 from the foul line in the opening stanza to pull within four points (32-28) at the break.  W&L finished the game 21-of-22 from the charity stripe and committed just 10 turnovers.  However, the Generals shot a mere 33.3 percent (19-57) from the floor.

Gauf registered a career-high 21 points to lead W&L in scoring.  She was a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line and contributed four assists.  Clifford posted 10 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the line, while sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) tallied eight points and 12 rebounds.  Corvino added seven points and 11 boards.

Parfitt notched a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hollins.  Wright logged 14 points and eight rebounds, while Catron had 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm contest.  The Generals will be celebrating National Women & Girls in Sports Day and there will be free pizza for any female in attendance.
