W&L Women's Hoops Stings the Hornets

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team held Shenandoah to just eight points in the final 7:27 to take a 61-52 victory over the Hornets in ODAC action on Tuesday night at the Warner Center.

With the game tied 44-44 with 7:27 on the clock, the Blue and White took advantage of a 9-0 run capped by sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks' (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) free throws to hold a 53-44 lead with 3:12 left to play.

Shenandoah (7-11, 4-5) scored three quick points to pull within five (53-48), but the Generals scored eight points down the stretch, all coming from the foul line, to secure their second victory in a row. 

The Hornets took control of the game early, taking a 21-15 lead with 6:45 left to play in the first half. W&L (5-11, 3-6) chipped away at the lead, going on a 5-0 run over the final 1:14 to go into the intermission only down six points (32-26).

For the game, W&L held a healthy 46-32 advantage on the glass, including a 31-20 edge in defensive rebounds. The Generals held the Hornets to just 33.9 percent (21-62) shooting and recorded a defensive season high by holding SU to just 13.3 percent (2-15) from behind the arc.

Junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) paced the Generals with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while also recorded two blocks and three steals. Sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) notched a double double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Hendricks added 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) tallied a career-high with 13 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, Va. / Great Bridge) led all scorers with 20 points, while also pulling in 10 rebounds. Junior forward Holly Chittenden Boyds, Md. / Poolsville) tallied 12 points, three assists and three steals. Senior guard Crystal Petrus (Fairfax, Va. / Chantilly) also reached double-figures, finishing with 10 points.

W&L returns to action on Thursday when it host Salem for a 7:00 pm contest.
