LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee shot just 30.0 percent (18-60) from the floor in falling to Hollins by a score of 60-48 in women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (3-7, 1-3) hit just two of their first nine shots from the floor in falling behind 12-4 in the opening 7:10 of the contest. W&L then went on an 8-2 run, keyed by four points from sophomore forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy), to slice it to a two-point game (14-12) with 8:37 left in the half. That would be as close and the Generals would get; however, as Hollins (5-7, 1-3) used an 8-0 surge over the next 3:14 to push out to a 10-point advantage (22-12) with 5:12 to play en route to a 28-21 lead at the break.
W&L closed to four points (32-28) early in the second half on a jumper by first-year forward Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) at the 16:22 mark, and remained within single digits of Hollins for much of the second half. However, cold shooting from the floor limited a comeback attempt. After a three-pointer by sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) at the 8:40 mark made it a five-point game (46-41), the Generals managed to hit just two of their final 14 shots from the floor in dropping their fifth-straight game to HU.
Sharman, sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) and first-year guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) led W&L with 10 points apiece. Vick and Wildes scored eight points each, with Vick corralling a game-high 10 rebounds.
Senior center Chanci Wright (Eden, Texas/Eden) paced Hollins with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Britney Campbell (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 4:00 pm contest.
