W&L Women's Basketball Edged By Sewanee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team picked up its fifth loss of the season as the Sewanee Tigers edged the Generals 53-47 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue and White used a strong defensive effort in the first half to take a 30-21 lead at the intermission. W&L (3-5) held Sewanee (6-4) to just 28.6% from the field on 8-of-28 shooting. Sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) led the effort with two steals in just eight minutes of action.

The Tigers started the second half with a quick 10-0 run to take the lead (31-30) at the 16:11 mark. On the ensuing possession, sophomore forward Katie Wildes (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) made a layup off a junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) assist to regain the lead (32-31).

Sewanne answered with an 11-2 run to take back the lead and jump out to a 42-34 advantage with 10:59 left to play. W&L chipped away at the lead and pulled within four points (51-47) with 27 seconds left to play.

W&L fouled on the next possession and the Tigers got two free throws from Paige Lowe to secure the 53-47 victory.

For the game, the Generals shot 38.5% from the field on 20-of-32 shooting and out-rebounded the Tigers 40-37.

Corvino led the Generals offense with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals, while sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) chipped in 10 points and five boards. Sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) added nine points and led the team with eight rebounds and Gauf had eight points and three rebounds.

Lowe led all scorers with 13 points and added three rebounds and two steals. Savannah Rose and Haley McDonough each recorded seven points and four boards, while Clarissa Medley had nine points and three rebounds. Casey Hassett scored eight points and notched a team-high seven rebounds.

The Generals will be back in action on Friday, January 3 as they host Apprentice for a 6:00 pm contest.
