W&L Women's Basketball Posts a 65-52 Win Over Gallaudet
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team used a 14-3 second-half run to pull away for a 65-52 victory over Gallaudet in the consolation game of the W&L Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The Generals (1-1) led by four points (33-29) at the break and clung to a one-point advantage (39-38) at the 16:19 mark before going on the game-deciding run. Sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) got things started with a jumper at 16:01 and W&L's defense forced three turnovers and held the Bison (0-2) to just 1-for-6 shooting during that stretch in claiming a 53-41 lead by the 10:30 mark.
An 8-1 Gallaudet run midway through the second stanza cut it to a five-point game (54-49) with 8:21 left, but the Generals pushed back out to a nine-point lead (58-49) just over two minutes later in pulling away for the 13-point win.
W&L shot just 38.0 percent (27-71) from the field, but committed only eight turnovers while racking up 16 assists. First-year guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) paced the Generals with a game-high 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Vick totaled 12 points and 10 boards.
Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn. / Montville) led the way for the Bison, totaling 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Gallaudet shot just 32.8 percent (20-61) from the floor.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Randolph College for a 7:00 pm contest.
