LEXINGTON, Va. – Roanoke held Washington and Lee to just two points in the final 9:58 of the contest en route to a 58-47 win over the Generals in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
After taking a 45-44 lead at the 9:58 mark on a jumper by senior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley), the Generals went scoreless over the next 7:44, allowing the Maroons to take an 11-point lead (56-45) with 2:29 left on the clock. A layup by first-year forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) at 2:14 ended the drought, but junior guard Laurel Hankins (Dublin, Va./Blind) landed two free throws for RC to reach the final score.
With a 30-29 edge at the half, RC (8-10, 4-5) pulled ahead by three, 32-29, off a jumper by sophomore guard Tatum McKee (Cornelius, N.C./North Mecklenburg) to start the second period. The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes before the Maroons netted four straight attempts from the field to pull ahead by seven (42-35) at the 13:51 mark. W&L (6-9, 3-6) fought back with a 10-2 run over 3:10 to give the Generals the 45-44 lead.
RC jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the contest, but a jumper by first-year guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Fenwick) put the Generals on the board at 16:53 (4-2). The Maroons stretched their advantage to five, 7-2, by the 13:20 mark, only to have W&L answer with five-straight points to tie the game, 7-7, at 12:11. The teams went back-and-forth for the rest of a half that featured five ties. After the contest was tied at 25-25 with 2:04 left in the half, W&L gained a three-point lead off of back-to-back jumpers by Warrick to go ahead 29-26 by 1:11. The Maroons answered with two baskets of their own, closing out the first half with the 30-29 lead.
RC scored 29 of its 58 points off of the Generals' 19 turnovers, but W&L kept its three-point defense in check by holding the Maroons to 2-for-16 (.125) from long range.
Warrick paced the Generals with 16 points and added six rebounds. Senior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga Tenn./Baylor) registered six points, 11 boards, six assists and a pair of steals, and Hendricks tallied 10 points and four rebounds.
The Maroons were led by McKee, who netted a game-high 17 points, while recording five rebounds and four steals. Hankins notched 14 points and seven boards, and junior guard Paxton Gwin (Buxton, N.C./Cape Hatteras Secondary) collected 10 points and eight rebounds.
W&L returns to action on Thursday, when it travels to York (Pa.) for a 7:00 pm contest.
