W&L Women's Basketball Falls to Hollins, 64-54

HOLLINS, Va. – Hollins went on an 11-2 run in the final 3:05 of the game to record a 64-54 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

After senior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) pulled W&L (507, 2-4 ODAC) to within one (53-52) on a jump shot at 3:10, HU (4-9, 1-5 ODAC) scored the contest's next nine points to give Hollins its largest lead of the game, 62-52, with 1:02 remaining. Wilson connected on one final shot with 16 seconds left on the clock (62-54), but senior guard Lacie Forest netted both free throw attempts at the 15-second mark for the final 64-54 score.

The Generals started the second half with a 9-0 stretch to pull ahead by 10 points (36-26) at the 17:30 mark. Hollins responded by cutting the lead to just three points, 40-37, by 12:59 off a layup by senior guard Jasmine Greene. A pair of free throws and a made jump shot by the Generals pushed their advantage back to seven (44-37), only to have HU junior guard Carrie Cox answer with a three pointer at 10:59 tp cut it to 44-40. Hollins chipped away and tied the game at 46-46 on a jump shot by first-year guard Mackenzie Miller with 7:50 left. First-year guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Fenwick) made one more basket before Hollins went on the 11-2 run to close out the contest.

W&L opened the game with a 7-2 run in the first 2:20 of action, capped by a jump shot by Wilson. At 16:21, Greene jump-started a stretch in which Hollins outscored the Generals 8-2 and took a 10-9 lead by the 13:13 mark. The teams exchanged baskets over the next 5:50 in which three lead changes occurred and HU held a 20-17 advantage at 7:23. W&L then scored the contest's next nine points to give itself a six-point lead at the 2:18 mark (26-20). Hollins closed out the half with six more points, while limiting W&L to just one made shot to cut the Generals' lead to two points, 28-26, at the break.

Hollins shot 50.9 percent from the floor (27-53), while limiting the Generals to just 37.7 percent from the field (23-61). Both teams struggled from distance as HU and W&L each went 3-for-11 (.273) from three-point range.

The Generals had three players score in double figures, including 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists from Wilson. Senior guard Megan Marks (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) notched 12 points and seven boards, and first-year forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Day School) recorded 11 points and six rebounds.

For Hollins, Greene registered a game-high 23 points, while also recording five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Junior forward Chanci Wright registered 12 points and 10 boards, and Forrest tallied eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and a block.

W&L returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
