W&L Women's Hoops Defeated by Guilford, 60-45

LEXINGTON, Va. – Guilford went on a 16-0 run in the final 6:41 of the first half to turn a two-point deficit into a 14-point lead, and never looked back as the Quakers defeated the Washington and Lee women's basketball team, 60-45, on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

After W&L (2-4, 1-1) took a 20-18 lead off a three-pointer by sophomore guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va./James Madison) at the 7:12 mark, GC sophomore guard Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) tied the game at 20-20 with a layup at 6:41.  First-year guard Lila Scott (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) then hit back-to-back three pointers just 37 seconds apart to push the Quakers' lead to six points (26-20) with 5:25 left to go. In the final 5:00, GC (5-2, 1-1) netted eight points with three different players scoring to take a 34-20 lead into intermission.

Less than a minute into the second stanza, senior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) ended the Generals' scoring draught with a layup at 19:10 (34-22). However, the Quakers answered back with four consecutive baskets over the next 1:31 to stretch their lead to 20 (42-22) with 16:43 left on the clock. A layup by Wilson at 16:27 ignited a 12-3 run by W&L that included eight points by Wilson and allowed the Blue and White to pull within 11, 45-34, by the 12:21 mark. Two field goals in the next 46 seconds by junior center Morgan King (Teachey, N.C./New Hanover) brought GC's lead back to 14 points (48-34).

The Generals got no closer than 15 points the rest of the contest as the Quakers pulled away for their third-straight win over the Blue and White.

For the game, Guilford limited W&L to just 32.8 percent (20-61) shooting from the field, while holding a 47-31 advantage in rebounds.

Wilson led W&L, notching her first double-double of the season on a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. First-year guard Alena Hamrick (Roanoke, Va./Green Briar East) recorded nine points, four rebounds and one block, and Gauf added seven points, four assists and two boards.

Junior forward Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) led GC in scoring with 15 points, while senior guard Brittany Atwater (Durham, N.C./Ravenscroft) paced the Quakers with five points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Scott also added eight points and sophomore forward Logan Hardin (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) registered five points and four boards.

After taking a short break, W&L will return to the court on December 16, when it hosts Southside Virginia Community College for a 1:00 pm contest.
