Generals Dump Hornets, 65-57, in Women's Basketball

LEXINGTON, Va. -- A late 20-7 run allowed the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to assume a 12-point lead (64-52) at 2:09 en route to a 65-57 win over Lynchburg on Friday evening at the Warner Center.

A jumper by senior guard Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) ignited the aforementioned 20-7 run and turned a 45-44 deficit into a 64-52 advantage with 2:09 left to play.

During the run, W&L (12-12, 10-9) made 8-of-10 shots in the 5:13 stretch, including three threes and 11 points from Pfannenstein, and three straight layups to cap the run from senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central).

LC pulled to within seven points (64-57) on a three-pointer by senior guard Carly Greenlief (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and a layup by senior forward Katie Crump (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) with under a minute to go, but the Hornets missed their final five shots from the field as W&L sealed its fifth win in its last six games.

After going into the break tied at 24-24, W&L began the second half slowly as it missed five of its first six attempts from the floor, and allowed LC to take a five-point lead by the 15:55 mark (31-26). A layup by Bolton and a three-pointer by Pfannenstein gave the Generals their first lead since late in the first half (33-31). The game continued the back-and-forth progression, until the Pfannenstein jumper began the aforementioned 20-7 run.

The Hornets opened the game with a quick 4-0 lead at 18:13 off of a Crump layup. An Ingram trey sandwiched around jumpers by junior forwards Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./ Herndon Langley) and Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) allowed the Generals to take a five-point lead with 14:01 left in the first half (11-6).

W&L took its largest lead of the first half at six points (17-11) with 10:57 to play, before missing its next nine shots from the floor, and allowing LC to creep back to within two (19-17). A three by Ingram at the 3:39 mark ended the drought, and put the Generals back up five (22-17), before LC ended the half on a 7-2 run to deadlock the score at 24-24 going into the break.

For the game, the Generals shot 49.1 percent from the floor (27-55), including an 8-for-14 performance from Bolton. LC made good on 42.1 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-57), but went just 4-for-26 from behind the arc.

Five W&L players scored in double figures, led by Bolton with 16 points. Pfannenstein and Ingram each netted 14 points, Warrick recorded 11 and Wilson notched 10 points. Wilson also posted eight rebounds, Bolton had seven boards and Ingram dished out nine assists.

The Hornets were led by Greenlief, with 16 points. Crump logged 13 points and nine rebounds, Allan tallied 11 points and eight boards, and senior forward Caitlin Falls (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) registered 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Generals return to action when they host Randolph on Saturday for a 4:00 pm contest.
