LEXINGTON, Va. - Five Generals scored in double figures, including senior forward Becca Bolton's (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) tenth double-double of the season, as the Washington and Lee women's basketball team defeated Roanoke, 69-59, Friday night at the Warner Center.
Bolton tallied 12 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and one block to lead W&L. Senior guards Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) and Meg Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) netted 13 and 12 points, respectively, junior forward Rachel Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley) notched 12 points and eight rebounds, and junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) contributed 10 points and 11 boards.
The Generals (8-11, 6-8) took an early 15-7 lead in the first few minutes of the game, featuring five points from Pfannenstein. A 10-6 run, jumpstarted by Roanoke's (4-13, 4-9) first year guard Kayla Lemke (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg), allowed the Maroons to gain a five-point advantage (29-24). Back-to-back layups by Wilson gave the Generals the two-point lead (33-31), but two late free throws by Lemke brought the score to 33-33 at the break.
RC took a quick three-point lead by the 18:38 mark in the second stanza (36-33), until a layup by Bolton with 16:19 left in the contest ignited an 11-4 run for the Generals, and was capped by three-point play by first year guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va./James Madison) to give W&L the nine point lead at 8:46 (50-41). During this stretch, the Maroons went 1-of-13 from the floor.
RC then made good four of its next seven shots from the field, and W&L missed all but two of its 10 attempts, as the Maroons brought the game to within two points with 3:32 left on the clock (56-54). Six unanswered points from the Generals occupied the following 1:51 to put them up nine points (63-53). Sophomore guard Paxton Gwin (Buxton, N.C./Cape Hatteras Secondary) netted a trey at 1:07 to pull the Maroons back to within six (63-57), but was not enough as W&L finished out the contest with two made free throws by Warrick and a jumper by Ingram to assume the 10-point victory.
The Blue and White netted 42.6 percent of their shots from the field (26-61), compared to RC's 37.5 percent shooting (21-56) in the game. W&L also outrebounded the Maroons 44-34.
For Roanoke, Gwin registered a team-high 16 points with nine rebounds, and first year guard Tatum McKee (Cornelius, N.C./North Mecklenburg) recorded nine points, five boards, and three steals.
The Generals will return to action Saturday afternoon as they face Bridgewater at the Warner Center for a 4:00 pm tip-off.
