ROANOKE, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team totaled 36 points to claim first-place out of eight teams at the Hollins/W&L IHSA Invitational on Sunday.
The Generals earned six Top 3 placings, including two wins to secure the team championship in their co-hosted show at Hollins. Randolph placed second with 33 points, while Bridgewater finished third with 32 markers. UVA and Lynchburg rounded out the Top 5 with 30 and 27 points, respectively.
Junior SarahCate Harrison (Tampa, Fla. / Wharton) claimed first in the novice equitation over fences, while she also placed second in the intermediate on the flat. Sophomore Dani Powers (McKenney, Va. / Dinwiddie) qualified for regionals with a first-place finish in the walk-trot.
Senior Jane Chiavelli (Ashland, Mass. / St. Mark's School) had a second-place showing in the open equitation over fences and first-year Maggie O'Berry (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) placed second in the walk-trot-canter 2B. First-year Curry Sherard (Spartanburg, S.C. / Spartanburg Day School) claimed third in the intermediate equitation over fences.
Washington and Lee is currently in fifth-place in the regional team standings with 146 points. Randolph leads the regional standings with 204 points, while UVA is second with 186 markers. Hollins has 170 points to claim the third spot, while Bridgewater is fourth with 167 points.
The Generals return to action next Saturday when they compete at the Bridgewater/JMU IHSA Invitational.
