W&L Equestrian Opens 2016-17 Season at Randolph IHSA Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team opened the 2016-17 season with a sixth-place finish at the Randolph IHSA Invitational on Saturday. Randolph took the top spot, while Sweet Briar finished second.

W&L had four Top 3 finishes, with sophomore SarahCate Harrison (Tampa, Fla. / Wharton) claiming first in the novice flat, while sophomore Sarah Walters (Glen Arm, Md. / McDonough School) took second in novice fences. Senior Ashley Ooms (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Reg.) had a third-place finish in open flat equitation and senior Jennifer Zachry (San Antonio, Texas / Alamo Heights) finished third in beginner walk-trot-canter.

Senior Caleigh Wells (Calabasas, Calif. / Louisville) placed fourth in Open Flat Equitation and junior Jane Chaivelli (Ashland, Mass. / St. Mark's School) took fourth in open equitation over fences. Junior Liza Allner (Reisterstown, Md. / Garrison Forest School) had a fourth-place finish in intermediate fences, while senior Laurel Romano (Milford, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy) took fourth in intermediate flat. First-years Lauren Fredericks (Los Gatos, Calif. / Los Gatos) and Erin Dringman (Big Timber, Mont. / Sweet Grass County) tied for fourth in walk-trot.

W&L returns to the field on October 17 at the Hollins IHSA Invitational.
