SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team was back in action for their second show of the winter season. The Generals recorded four Top-5 finishes en route to a fifth place finish at the Sweet Briar IHSA Invitational on Sunday.
The format for the show was "team only," with entries limited to one rider per division, making it a head-to-head competition.
The Blue and White closed the day with 21 points, one point behind Bridgewater (22). Randolph led the day with 35 points to be named champion, followed by Sweet Briar (27) and Hollins (24). Virginia finished sixth with 17 points, while Lynchburg (13), JMU (8), Liberty (3), Roanoke (3) and Radford (0) rounded out the results.
The Generals were off to a strong start with a sophomore Laura Lemon (Roanoke, Va. / North Cross) win in the open on the flat. Senior captain Maia Robbins (Seattle, Wash. / Lakeside School) continued the trend by placing third in the intermediate on the flat, while Junior Charlotte Magee (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin) finished fourth in the novice over fences division.
Robbins and Magee will now join Lemon, who qualified at Randolph in the fall, at the IHSA Regional event to be held on February 23 at UVA. As a team, the Generals remain in fourth-place in the regional team standings.
Other top performances include senior Alexandria Vittitow (Louisville, Ky. / Sacred Heart Academy) registering a second-place showing in the walk-trot, senior Claire Stevenson (Southampton, N.Y./St. Paul's School) coming in sixth in the open over fences and Magee placing sixth in the novice flat.
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday, February 15 when they compete in the Bridgewater IHSA Invitational.
