W&L Equestrian Named Reserve Champion at Hollins Invite

HOLLINS, Va. – The Washington and Lee equestrian team finished as the Reserve Champion at the Hollins IHSA Invitational on Saturday.

Virginia claimed the team title with 38 points, while the Generals recorded 35 points for a close second and Hollins took third with 33 points. Bridgewater (32), Randolph (28), Sweet Briar (26), Radford (24), Lynchburg (22), James Madison (17), Longwood (17), Roanoke (10) and Mary Baldwin (4) wrapped up the team results. 

First-year Laura Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) led the Generals, earning High Point Rider honors after claiming two first-place performances. She finished atop the standings in the open over fences and was also champion in the intermediate flat.

First-year Sara Cook (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and sophomore Megan Shearer (Columbia, Md./Notre Dame Prep) also recorded first place in their respective events. Cook took a first place ribbon in the intermediate over fences, while Shearer topped all other competitors in the walk-trot. 

In the novice flat, sophomores Charlotte Magee (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and Sarah Ward (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) each placed third in their respective section. Magee also claimed second place in novice over fences.

Assisting Lemon in the open over fences, junior Claire Stevenson (Southampton, N.Y./St. Paul's School) registered fourth place and senior Molly Rountree (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) finished right behind in fifth. Stevenson's performance allowed her to qualify for IHSA Zone 4 Regionals, which took place on Sunday. 

Other top performances include senior Stephanie Malaska (Redmond, Wash./Eastside Catholic) taking fourth in the intermediate flat, Rountree placing fifth in the open flat and sophomore Stephanie Banning (Bothell, Wash./Henry M. Jackson) claiming sixth in the beginner section of walk-trot-canter.

After the day's competition, the teams would enter the IHSA Zone 4 Regionals, which took place on Sunday, with the following team standings: Virginia (243), Randolph (241), Bridgewater (240), Sweet Briar (236), Hollins (220), W&L (217), Lynchburg (196), James Madison (156), Radford (100), Longwood (95), Roanoke (80), Mary Baldwin (34).

The Generals finished the IHSA regular season with competition at the University of Virginia Invitational on Sunday.
