W&L Riding Places Third at Sweet Briar IHSA Invite

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Washington and Lee riding team recorded 30 points and three first-place finishes to take third place at the Sweet Briar IHSA Invitational on Saturday.

Hollins reigned in 36 points to lead the pack, while Randolph (34) finished second and W&L capped the top three places. Sweet Briar (26), Virginia (25), Bridgewater (24), Lynchburg (23), James Madison (16), Radford (12), Longwood (6) and Mary Baldwin (6) rounded out the team results.

Sophomores Charlotte Magee (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and Rachel Christensen (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), and first-year Laura Lemon (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) each highlighted the Generals' performances with first-place finishes. Magee took the top spot in novice over fences, Lemon was first in the intermediate flat and Christensen placed first in the beginning section of the walk-trot-canter.

Assisting Lemon in the intermediate flat, junior Claire Stevenson (Southampton, N.Y./St. Paul's School) finished second in the event. Lemon placed third in the open over fences and first-year Sara Cook (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) was also third in the intermediate over fences.

Other top performances include a fourth-place finish by Magee in the novice flat, sophomore Megan Shearer (Columbia, Md./Notre Dame Prep) notching fourth in the walk-trot, sophomore Ainsley Bloomer (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) taking fifth behind Shearer in the walk-trot and senior Keriann Laubach (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) placing fifth in the advanced section of the walk-trot-canter. Senior Molly Rountree (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) finished sixth in the open flat.

The Generals now take a break in the season and will return to action on February 8, when they travel to the Randolph/Lynchburg IHSA Invitational.
