W&L Men's Cross Country Picked Second in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2014 men's cross country preseason coaches' poll on Thursday, and Washington and Lee received 87 points, including one first-place vote, to land second out of 11 schools.

Defending champion, Bridgewater, collected 10 of the 11 first-place votes on its way to 100 poll points to lead the voting. Lynchburg sits third with 78 tallies, Eastern Mennonite follows with 77 points in fourth and Roanoke completes the Top 5 with 65 tallies.

Virginia Wesleyan holds the sixth spot with 52 points and Shenandoah is seventh with 43 points. Emory & Henry (33), Guilford (32), Hampden-Sydney (21) and Randolph (17) round out the poll.

The Generals took third at the 2013 ODAC Championship, finishing nine points out of second. Rising sophomore Mac Strehler (Moseley, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) led W&L, earning First Team All-ODAC honors and was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year. He placed fifth with a time of 26:45.10.

Rising junior Levi Warring (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) took 21st (28:09.90) and rising sophomore Phillip Harmon (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) claimed 25th (28:51.20). Strehler and Warring went on to earn all-region honors at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional.

W&L brings back eight returners from last season's squad, while adding three first-years to the mix. The Generals open the 2014 season on Saturday, September 6, at the Sewanee Invitational at 11:00 am.
