NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's cross country team finished 12th out of 24 teams at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championship hosted by Christopher Newport on Saturday.
Fellow ODAC member Bridgewater College won the race to qualify its squad for the NCAA Division III Championship next weekend in Indiana. Centre's John Kieffer was the individual champion with a time of 24:32.82.
First-year Mac Strehler (Moseley, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) led the way for the Generals with an 18th-place finish out of 174 competitors with a time of 25:50.45 that earned him all-region honors. Sophomore Levi Warring (Williamsburg, Va. / Lafayette) also garnered all-region recognition by placing 31st overall with a time of 26:10.91. The duo are the Generals' first all-region runners since Harrison Tucker earned the distinction in 2009.
Senior Kane Thomas (Seattle, Wash. / Shorewood) placed third on the team and 60th overall (26:53.92) and first-year Christopher Cardon (White Plains, N.Y. / White Plains) finished 81st overall with a time of 27:31.65. Sophomore Jacob Strauss (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls) rounded out the Generals' Top 5 with a 97th-place finish in 27:57.83.
First-years Phillip Harmon (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) and Ian McDonald (Richmond, Va. / Douglas S. Freeman) rounded out W&L's competitors in the field. Harmon finished 112th (28:18.91) and McDonald placed 117th (28:30.90).
The Washington and Lee men have now completed their season.
