W&L Men’s Cross Country Picked Seventh in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2012 men’s cross country preseason coaches’ poll on Monday, and Washington and Lee received 50 points and is tied with Eastern Mennonite for seventh out of 11 schools.

Defending league champion Lynchburg collected eight first-place votes on the way to 98 poll points to lead the voting. Bridgewater sits second with 86 tallies, including a pair of top nods, followed by Roanoke with 71 points. Guilford received the remaining first-place vote and totaled 69 points to sit in fourth. Virginia Wesleyan follows in fifth with 65 points and Shenandoah is sixth with 59. After EMU and W&L are Hampden-Sydney (26), Emory & Henry (17) and Randolph with 14.

In 2011, the Generals took sixth at the ODAC Championship, finishing 10 points out of fifth. Junior Kane Thomas (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood) led W&L, crossing the line 18th in 27:16.00. Senior captain Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew’s) took 30th with a time of 27:47.90.

The team returns six runners from last year’s squad along with six first-year athletes. Besides Thomas and Gehrs, the Generals will look to sophomore James Busch (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) to regularly be in the top five.

W&L opens the season on Friday, August 31, at the ODAC Preview Meet at Peakview Farms in Harrisonburg, Va.
