FOREST, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's cross country team was picked to finish sixth out of 10 teams by league coaches in the recently released ODAC Men's Cross Country Preseason Poll.
Defending league champion Lynchburg sits atop the poll with 9-of-10 first-place votes and 81 points. Guilford is second with 67 points and Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan tied for third with 59 points apiece, with the Marlins collecting the final first-place vote. Roanoke (48), W&L (43), Hampden-Sydney (27), Randolph (27), Eastern Mennonite (22) and Emory & Henry (17) rounded out the poll.
The Generals, coming off a sixth-place finish at last year's ODAC Championships, welcome back seniors Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan). Gossett was the Generals' top finisher as last season's meet, narrowly missing All-ODAC honors with a 15th-place finish.
A Second Team All-ODAC honoree as a sophomore, Warneford-Thomson finished in 21st place last year and won his second-consecutive ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Also returning for the Generals are junior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrews) and the school record holder in the indoor 800m, sophomore Kane Thomas (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood).
The Generals open the 2011 season when they host the W&L Invitational on September 11, with the men's race slated to begin at 11:00 am.
