LEXINGTON, Va. — For the first time since 1988, the Washington and Lee men's track and field team claimed the Outdoor ODAC Championship. The Generals totaled 219.5 points to win the title on Saturday out of nine teams at Wilson Field.
The Blue and White eclipsed second-place Bridgewater (175.5 points) by 44 points. Lynchburg finished in third with 142 points.
W&L won four events on Saturday, and following the meet Head Coach Brandon Uhl was named the ODAC Coach of the Meet and first-year Shep Sims (Charleston, W.Va./Woodberry Forest School) was honored as the Rookie of the Meet.
Sims earned the honor after winning the pole vault on Friday evening. Sophomore Dash Dericks (Spring, Texas/The American School in Switzerland) won two throwing events on Saturday. He claimed the javelin title with a toss of 53.42m (175'3.50") and the discus at 46.13m (151'4.50"). Senior Patrick Robertson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) was fourth in the discus at 40.84m (134'0.25").
Senior Ian McDonald (Richmond, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) won the 1,500m for the third time in his career. He crossed the finish line in 3:56.65 to take the title. Sophomore Cooper Baird (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) was third (3:58.65) in the event and junior MacKenzye Leroy (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) finished fourth (4:00.03). In the 5,000m, Leroy was second in 15:21.90, and senior Mac Strehler (Moseley, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) placed fifth (15:32.94).
The 4x400m relay closed out the meet with a victory in 3:22.42. The quartet consisted of sophomore Carter Huffman (Sophia, N.C./South Western Randolph), first-year Donovan Fiore (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler Prep Academy) and seniors Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo./The Barstow School) and Jack Jones (Lookout Mountain, Ga./McCallie School).
In the 400m, the Generals took three of the Top 5 spots. Huffman was second in 49.60, Jones was third (49.61) and Fiore claimed fifth (50.74). Jones was also fifth in the 200m (22.92), while Fiore was sixth (23.04).
Sophomore Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) had two second-place finishes. He was second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.25, and second in the 400m hurdles at 54.91. Sophomore Albert Del Cristo (Clarksburg, N.J. / Notre Dame) took eighth in the 400m hurdles in 1:03.71.
Baird finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:57.27, while Roberts was fourth in 1:59.08. In the triple jump, senior Harrison DeKnight was sixth at 12.75m (41'10.00").
The 4x100m relay claimed fourth in 43.31. The foursome consisted of junior Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg), Fiore, Huffman and Jones.
W&L has now won the cross country, indoor and outdoor ODAC titles in the same school year for the first time in school history.
All competitors and relays that finished in the Top 3 in an event earned All-ODAC accolades. The Generals next compete at the Liberty Twilight on May 3.
