FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2014 men's tennis preseason coaches poll on Friday and Washington and Lee was picked first among the league's 11 tennis members.
The Generals garnered 10 first-place votes and totaled 100 points. They were followed by Bridgewater in second with 83 total points. Virginia Wesleyan totaled 75 points and was followed by Guilford in fourth with the remaining first-place vote and 68 points. Hampden-Sydney (62), Randolph-Macon (58), Roanoke (52), Emory & Henry (43), Randolph (25), Lynchburg (20) and Shenandoah (19) rounded out the poll.
Washington and Lee will be seeking its fifth straight title in 2014. Overall, the Generals have claimed 32 of the previous 37 championships sponsored by the ODAC. W&L knocked off Bridgewater in last season's title tilt by a score of 5-0.
The Generals return five of their top six singles and doubles players from last season's squad that finished 18-6 overall and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Among the top returnees are junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) and sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin), who combined to post a 26-6 doubles record in 2013, advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship. Shamshiri went 14-14 at No. 2 singles and Holt finished 15-8 at No. 3 singles.
W&L begins the spring portion of its 2013-14 spring schedule tomorrow when it hosts Methodist for a 12:00 pm contest.
