FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team opened its 2013-14 season on Saturday in the Mary Washington Kickoff Classic.
In singles play, sophomore John Kirby (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) went 2-0 overall on the day. He opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Andrew Curtis of Mary Washington, before defeating Scott Buie of UMW by a score of 7-6 (6), 6-1. Sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) posted a 1-1 mark, defeating North Carolina Wesleyan's Johan Ljungdahl by a score of 7-6 (7), 7-6 (1) and falling to Aaron Capitel of George Mason, 6-4, 6-3.
Three W&L doubles teams posted wins in their only match of the day. The tandem of Holt and junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) downed a team from George Mason, 8-5. First-year Jordan Krasner (Rockville, Md. / Walter Johnson) and sophomore Brian Krouskos (Alpharetta, Ga. / Mount Pisgah Christian) knocked off a team from North Carolina Wesleyan by a score of 8-6 and the team of Kirby and sophomore Robert Eckstein (New Orleans, La. / Isidore Newman) posted an 8-5 win over a duo from Mary Washington.
Action continues on Sunday with two rounds of doubles action and one round of singles play.
