KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Washington and Lee sophomore Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas/ATA College Prep) and first-year Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) won their quarterfinal match on Friday at the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship hosted by Kalamazoo College.
Shamshiri and Holt bested the tournament's second-seeded duo of Adam Putterman and Ross Putterman from Washington University in St. Louis, 6-2, 6-4. The win improved the tandem to 26-5 on the season, tied for the fifth-best season doubles team record in school history.
Shamshiri and Holt will next take on the winner of a match between Robert Kjellberg and Artsiom Prostak of North Carolina Wesleyan or Matt Bettles and Rob Crampton of Bates in the semifinals on Saturday at 11:00 am. Shamshiri and Holt have played Kjellberg and Prostak twice already this season, winning both matches. The first was a 9-8 (7-5) win on March 31 and the second was an 8-6 win on May 9.
The NCAA Division III Doubles Championship match will be played on Saturday at 1:00 pm. W&L has not claimed a doubles champion in men's tennis since Bill Meadows and John Morris won it back-to-back in 1989 and 1990.
