FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee senior Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) has advanced to the singles semifinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Sunday.
White defeated Mary Washington's Evan Charles in the championship singles Round of 16 by a score of 6-2, 6-2, then knocked off Johns Hopkins' Ben Hwang in the quarterfinals by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The third-seeded White will square off against second-seeded Tanner Brown from Johns Hopkins in the semifinals.
In the consolation bracket of the championship singles flight, two Generals will meet in the semifinals. First-year Michael Holt (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin) and sophomore Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas/ATA College Prep) both won a pair of matches on Sunday and will face each other in the semifinals on Monday.
In championship doubles action, the duo of Holt and Shamshiri were felled in the quarterfinals by Will Duncan and Duke Miller of Carnegie Mellon, 8-4.
White will pursue his second regional singles title with the semifinals and finals on Monday. He won the event as a first-year student in 2009.
