FOREST, Va. – Washington and Lee sits atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Men's Tennis Coaches Poll, which was announced on Thursday. W&L garnered nine of 10 first-place votes.
The Generals totaled 81 points to rank first in the poll, while Bridgewater claimed one first-place vote and 66 points to rank second. Guilford sits in third with 57 points, followed by Hampden-Sydney (56), Roanoke (49), Emory & Henry (47), Virginia Wesleyan (35), Randolph-Macon (32), Lynchburg (17) and Randolph (10).
W&L will be seeking its third straight league title and 15th league crown in the last 16 years. The Generals return eight letterwinners from last season's team that finished 15-4 overall and 9-0 in conference play.
Headlining the returnees is junior two-time All-American Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson). White went 19-5 in singles and 20-4 in doubles last season, and he enters the spring ranked fifth in the Atlantic South Region and 18th nationally in singles.
First-year Michael Goldstein (Chapel Hill, N.C./Baylor School) went 4-5 in singles and 3-4 in doubles during the fall season, and he advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA fall regional. He enters the spring campaign ranked 11th regionally and 48th nationally in singles.
Addtionally, seniors Jeremy Becht (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah), Mac Davis (Prospect, Ky./Kentucky Country Day), Ben Fass (Baltimore, Md./Friends), Michael Freeman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Brian Roberts (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) all return after earning All-ODAC honors throughout their careers.
The Generals open the spring portion of their schedule on Saturday as they play host to Christopher Newport for a 2:00 pm match.
