FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team continued play in its fall season, taking part in the University of Mary Washington Kickoff Classic over the weekend.
The top showing for the Generals was senior Michael Freeman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), who won all three of his singles matches. On Saturday, Freeman topped George Mason's Jordan Borsanyi, 6-1, 6-1, and UMW's Kaleb Nguyen, 6-3, 6-1. Playing on Sunday, he defeated Kevin Aquino of Mary Washington, 6-3, 6-0.
Going 2-1 in singles play for the Generals over the weekend were first-year Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), senior Brian Roberts (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and junior Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson).
In doubles action, the pairs of senior Jeremy Becht (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah) and Hu, and first-year Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas/ATA College Prep) and first-year Michael Goldstein (Chapel Hill, N.C./Baylor School) both posted 2-1 ledgers for the weekend. Becht and Hu defeated George Mason's Kevin McMillen and Steven Hyre, 8-4 and UMW's Alex Blakhin and Will Apperson, 8-3, but fell to Mason's Taylor Sargent and Christopher Borden, 9-8.
Shamshiri and Goldstein topped Longwood's Edward Becker and Steed Johnson, 8-2, and UMW's Tyler Carey and Evan Charles, 8-4, but were defeated by Mason's Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton, 8-6.
W&L returns to action on Oct. 1, competing at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Mary Washington.
