Becht and Megargel Earn ODAC Player of the Week Awards

FOREST, Va. – Washington and Lee had two athletes claim the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week Award in their respective sport for the week ending February 27.

Senior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) received the weekly honor for women's lacrosse, while junior Jeremy Becht (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah) was tabbed for men's tennis.

Megargel helped lead the W&L women's lacrosse team to a pair of victories last week, posting a 21-13 win over Sewanee on Thursday and a 10-9 triumph over Stevenson on Sunday.

In the win over Sewanee, she finished with a career-high six goals and one assist, to go along with one draw control.  She then posted four goals and one helper against the Mustangs, tallying the game-winning score with just 18 seconds remaining.

A Second Team All-ODAC selection last season, Megargel leads the team in scoring this spring with 17 points on 13 goals and four assists.  She is just seven points away from scoring her 100th career point (80 G, 13 A).

Becht played a large role for the Generals' men's tennis team in a 2-0 week.  In a 9-0 win over Bridgewater on Saturday, he posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Brad DeWitt at No. 2 singles and teamed with junior Jonathan Gaffney to defeat DeWitt and Brent Floyd at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-4.

In an 8-1 win over No. 25 Salisbury on Sunday, Becht produced a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (3) win over David Lupinetti at No. 2 singles and teamed with Gaffney to defeat Lupinetti and Henry Stuhler at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.

For the year, Becht is 6-3 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.  A two-time First Team All-ODAC honoree and the 2009 ODAC Rookie of the Year, he has notched a 39-20 singles record and a 33-18 doubles mark over his first three seasons.

The W&L women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday when it hosts third-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a 1:00 pm contest.  The men's tennis team competes again on Thursday when it travels to Lynchburg for a match at 3:30 pm.
