W&L Mens Tennis Hosts ODAC Singles Championship
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington
and Lee men’s tennis team opened its 2009-10 campaign by
hosting the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Singles Championship
at the W&L Courts on Saturday.
The Generals advanced one player to the semifinals of the number
one flight, four players to the semifinals of the number two flight
and four more players to the semifinals of the third singles
flight. Three more players have yet to begin play in the
fourth singles flight.
At No. 1 singles, first-year Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson)
opened the competition with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lynchburg’s
Kristian Richardson. He then knocked off Roanoke’s Jon
Roy, 6-1, 5-0 (Ret.) to set up Sunday’s semifinal matchup
with Rich Pugh of Hampden-Sydney.
In the second singles flight, junior Tim Watson (White Stone,
Va./Landon) and sophomores Mac Davis (Prospect, Ky./Kentucky
Country Day), Jonathan Gaffney (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and
Michael Freeman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) all went 2-0 to advance to
the semifinals. Davis will face Gaffney and Watson will
entertain Freeman for the right to advance to the finals.
At No. 3 singles, seniors Alex Brooke (Colorado Springs,
Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) and Cliff Gaddy (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport)
and juniors Tad Hatcher (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Will
Hall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) all advanced to the
semifinals after posting 2-0 records for the day. Hall will
play Brooke and Gaddy will take on Hatcher.
Final day action continues on Sunday morning from the Washington
and Lee tennis courts.
