White Advances at ITA Southeast Region Tennis Championships
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee first-year Hayden
White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) won both of his matches on Sunday to
advance to the semifinals of the championship singles flight at the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III
South/Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington.
White defeated Warren Elgort of Johns Hopkins in the Round of 16
by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (11), 6-1 and then knocked off Zachary Kelm
of Swarthmore, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Sophomores Jeremy Becht (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah) and Jonathan
Gaffney (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) both advanced to the
quarterfinals of the consolation bracket on Sunday, but both were
defeated. Becht fell to Mary Washington’s Sam Wichlin, 6-3,
7-5 and Gaffney was defeated by Riley Baver, also of Mary
Washington, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.
In doubles, the tandem of Becht and Gaffney and the duo of juniors
Tim Watson (White Stone, Va./Landon) and Will Hall (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine/Cape Elizabeth) both fell in the consolation quarters in the
championship bracket. Becht and Gaffney retired due to injury in
their match with Baver and Wichlin of UMW, while Watson and Hall
were defeated by Adam Cranford and Kevin Papen of Washington
College, 9-7.
White will continue his play in the ITA Regional on Monday morning
with the championship singles semifinals.
