W&L Men's Swimming Kicks Off Competition at BMC Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team opened up the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Friday afternoon, sitting eighth with 145 points.

After day one, Queens University of Charlotte leads the men's side with 473.5 points and Wingate is second with 417 points. Johns Hopkins is third with 322 points, while Limestone (237) and Pfeiffer (175) round out the Top 5. Scad (152), Fairmount (146), W&L, Carson-Newman (145), Catawba (116.5), West Virginia Wesleyan (96), Randolph-Macon (91), Lenior Rhyne (73) and Davis & Elkins (66) complete the results.

15 individuals and two relays competed in today's events. The 200 free relay consisted of first-years John Womack (Glendale, Ariz. / Glendale Preparatory Academy), Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough), Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) and Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial) earned the Generals 40 points when they placed ninth in a time of 1:26.18. Seniors Matthew Hesser (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School), Daivd Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood), along with first-year Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) and sophomore Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga. / Dunwoody) also teamed up to take ninth place and earn 40 points in the 400 medley relay (3:28.62).

Sophomore William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) and first-year Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) led the individuals by placing 25th in their respective events. Fries finished the 500 free in 4:48.86, while Babcock touched the wall in the 200 IM in a time of 1:56.60.

Three other competitors swam in the 500 free for the Generals, led by sophomore Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) who placed 30th in a time of 4:51.37. First-year James Hayes (Chattanooga, Tenn. / McCallie School) placed 37th in 4:55.54 and first-year Nelson Helm (Salem, Va. / Salem) touched in at 5:00.34 for 41st place.

Ferguson also competed in the 200 IM, finishing in 26th place just behind Babcock in a time of 1:56.63. First-year Cole Schott (Nashville, Tenn. / Hume-Fogg Academic) placed 34th (1:59.33), while first-years Christopher Myers (Essex, Conn. / Valley Regional) and Alexander Kirven (Davidson, N.C. / William Amos Hough) placed 38th and 45th in times of 2:00.81 and 2:04.64, respectively.

Kiser led four Generals in the 50 free, tying for 34th place in a time of 21.66. Burns finished just four spots behind Kiser in 38th place after finishing in 21.72. Sophomore Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) (22.00) and Womack (22.27) finished in 40th and 42nd place, respectively.

Wrapping up W&L's performance in the 50 free was Botelho coming in at 44th place (23.15) and Pritchard taking 50th place (22.56).

W&L returns to the pool on Saturday when it competes in the second day of competition at the BMC Championships. Preliminary rounds are set to begin at 10:00 am.
