CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's swim team earned 229 points on day one of the Wingate Invitational to sit in third place behind Gardner-Webb (402) and Wingate (492).
David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood) led W&L with its highest finish of the day, taking home seventh place in the 100 breast in a time of 1:03.17. Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School) also placed in the Top 10, finishing in ninth place in the 200 breast (2:00.59), while Christopher Myers (Essex, Conn. / Valley Regional) placed ninth in the 100 breast (1:04.33)
First-years Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) (2:05.90), Cole Schott (Nashville, Tenn. / Hume-Fogg Academic) (2:06.99) and Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) (2:08.11) finished 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 200 IM, while Alex Fox placed 14th in the 500 free (5:02.29).
The men's 200 free relay team finished seventh (A) and eighth (B) in 1:31.62 and 1:32.75, repectively, while the 400 medley relay A team finished eighth (3:45.85) and the B team finished 10th (3:56.61).
The men will be back in action on Saturday for day two of the invitational. Action is set to start at 7:30 pm.
