W&L Men's Swimming Finishes Sixth at BMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team wrapped up competition at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Saturday, recording 251 points to place sixth.
Wingate claimed the BMC Conference title with 789 points. Queens University of Charlotte took second with 643 points, Johns Hopkins finished third with 481 points, Catawba registered 318 points for fourth and Limestone wrapped up the top five with 300 points. Behind W&L was Fairmont State (249), Scad (197), Pfeiffer (106), West Virginia Wesleyan (104), Lenoir Rhyne (89) and Randolph-Macon (72).
Senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) took home the highest individual placing for the Generals on the night, finishing fifth in the 200 back in a time of 1:50.94 to record an NCAA "B" cut time. First-year Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) also registered a "B" cut time in the event, clocking in at 1:53.13 for 10th. Senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) recorded a top eight time in the 100 free, clocking in at an NCAA "B" cut time of 45.93 to place eighth.
Other top performances include junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) taking 11th in the 200 back (1:53.73), junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) touching in at 11th in the 200 breast (2:07.46) and junior Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) coming in at 13th in the 200 fly (1:56.81). Gehrs also placed 16th in the 100 free (46.63) and Shuman claimed 15th in the 1650 free (17:06.25)
With the conclusion of the regular season, select individuals will wait to see if they qualify for the NCAA Championships, taking place March 20-23.
