W&L Men's Swimming Kicks Off Competition at BMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team opened up the 2013 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Wednesday evening, sitting third with 48 points.
After day one, Wingate leads the men's side with 73 points and Queens University of Charlotte is second with 68 points. Behind W&L are Johns Hopkins (46), Limestone (45), Fairmont State (32), Catawba (28), Scad (26), Pfeiffer (23), Lenoir Rhyne (21), Randolph-Macon (14) and West Virginia Wesleyan (11).
Five individuals and one relay competed in this evening's events. All five competitors in the 1000 freestyle scored for the Generals, led by first-year William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) who placed fifth in a time of 9:47.22. First-year Alex Fox (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) placed 13th in 10:07.47 and junior Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) touched in close behind in 10:08.69 for 14th place. Wrapping up W&L's performances was first-year Brody Lawson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) coming in at 15th place (10:10.81) and sophomore Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) taking 16th place (10:13.63).
Fries was joined by senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's), sophomore Chase Flint (Suwanee, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) and first-year Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody) in the 800 free relay, touching the wall in seventh place in a time of 6:57.43.
W&L returns to the pool on Thursday when it competes in the second day of competition at the BMC Championships. Preliminary rounds are set to begin at 10:00 am.
