W&L Men's Swimming Defeats VMI, 169-90
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team won 11 events in a 169-90 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Saturday at the Clark King Pool on the campus of VMI.
Senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) led the Generals with three event wins, including an NCAA "B"-cut time of 20.74 in the 50 free. He teamed up with seniors Tyler Gehrs (Alexandra, Va./St. Andrew's), Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) and Will Ericson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) in the 200 free relay to take first and clock in at 1:29.15, and took the top spot in the 100 free in a time of 46.78.
Gehrs also placed first in the 200 IM (1:59.79), while Marsh claimed first in the 200 free (1:49.72).
Other first-place performances include junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) touching the wall in 53.64 in the 100 fly, junior Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) in the 200 fly (2:00.80) and first-year Brody Lawson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) clocking in at 5:02.42 in the 500 free. First-years William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirwood), Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) each notched first place on the day. Fries placed first in the 1000 free (10:14.81), Haley topped the 200 back (1:58.27) and Sigmon recorded first in the 200 breast (2:24.74).
W&L has completed its regular season and will return to the pool to compete at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on February 13-16 at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.
