W&L Men's Swimming Takes Fourth at BMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two NCAA B-cut performances highlighted the final day of competition, as the Washington and Lee men's swimming team finished fourth overall at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Saturday.
Senior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) led the Generals with a third-place, and an NCAA-qualifying time, in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.51. Senior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) also qualified in the 100 free, clocking in at 45.99 seconds for sixth place. W&L claimed fourth-place overall with 345.4 points.
Wingate won the championships, recording 714 points, Queens University of Charlotte was second at 565 points and Johns Hopkins claimed third with 520.5 points. Catawba (285), Scad (271), Fairmont State (227), Limestone (204), West Virginia Wesleyan (139), Lenoir Rhyne (107), Pfeiffer (98), Transylvania (90), Randolph-Macon (77) and Davis & Elkins (20) wrapped up the team results.
Junior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) supported Stirling in the 100 back, touching in at seventh place and a time of 46.19. In the 400 free relay, the quartet of Stirling, Sykes, and seniors Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) posted a fifth-place finish, timing in at 3:06.19.
Two Generals registered top eight performances in the 200 fly, led by sophomore Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) who finished seventh (1:55.16). B. Stirling was eighth with a time of 1:57.35.
Select W&L swimmers will now travel to the NCAA Division III Championships to take part March 22-24 in Indianapolis, Ind.
