W&L FALLS TO ROANOKE IN ODAC FINALS, 3-2
LEXINGTON, VA.. -- The Roanoke men's soccer team scored three
first half goals in defeating Washington and Lee, 3-2, in the ODAC
Finals Saturday afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields. The victory
catapults Roanoke into the NCAA Division III Soccer
Championships.
The Maroons (17-2) jumped on the board just 6:39 into the game as
junior midfielder Brandan Moffett (Laurel, Md./Laurel) scored a
breakaway goal. The Maroons made it 2-0 at the 12:14 mark as junior
midfielder Harold McConnell (Sussex, N.J./High Point Regional)
scored on a rebound off a penalty kick that was saved by W&L
junior goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep). The
Maroons increased their lead to 3-0 six minutes later as senior
midfielder Ryan Pflugrad (Columbia, Md./Hammond) scored on a
free-kick from 20 yards out.
W&L freshman midfielder Justin Mygatt (Winston, Ga./Woodward
Academy) tallied his first of two second half goals 68:39 into the
contest off an assist from sophomore forward Bret Grote
(Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Mygatt recorded his second goal
with 2:35 left to play off an assist from sophomore midfielder
Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood).
Roanoke sophomore goalkeeper Chris Ebeling (Ellicott City,
Md./Oakland Hills) made three saves to earn the victory. Foley made
three saves for W&L.
W&L senior sweeper Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry),
senior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) and
Foley were named to the All-Tournament Team. Roanoke was
represented on the team by Ebeling, Pflugrad, Moffett and
McConnell.

W&L ADVANCES TO ODAC FINALS WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
LEXINGTON, VA. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team
advanced to the ODAC Tournament Finals for the second consecutive
season with a 1-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney in semifinal action
on Friday afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields.
The Generals scored the lone goal with 16:20 gone by in the first
half when senior sweeper Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry)
chipped a shot over Tiger goalkeeper Austin Krison (Birmingham,
Ala./Mountian Brook) that rolled into the net.
Hampden-Sydney (13-6-1) appeared to tie the game at 1-1 eight
minutes later, but an apparent goal by sophomore Pat Whitehead
(Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) was nullified by an offside
call.
W&L (12-3-1) junior goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown,
Md./Georgetown Prep) made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of
the season. Krison made three saves in the losing effort.
The Generals and Tigers each took seven shots, but Hampden-Sydney
held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
W&L returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it squares
off on the Liberty Hall Fields against Roanoke at 1:30 pm in the
ODAC Finals. The winner will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA
Division III Championships.

The Washington and Lee men's soccer team avenged its only
conference loss of the season as it defeated Guilford, 2-1, in the
ODAC Tournament quarterfinals Saturday afternoon on the Liberty
Hall Fields.
The Generals (11-3-1) jumped on the board first as sophomore
midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) tallied
his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Senior defender Paul
Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) recorded the assist off a free
kick. W&L took a 2-0 lead at the 66:35 mark as senior forward
Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored off a cross from
sophomore midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood).
Guilford (9-11) cut the lead in half with 5:59 to play as
sophomore defender T.J. Muse (Reidsville, N.C./Southeast Guilford)
tallied a unassisted goal.

Prep) made one save to earn the victory. Guilford sophomore keeper

clinched the number one seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament with a
3-1 victory at Bridgewater on Thursday afternoon.
The Generals (10-3-1, 8-1 ODAC) jumped on the board first as
sophomore forward Bret Grote (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny)
scored off an assist from junior defender Paul Negron (Massapequa
Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) in the first half.
W&L tacked on two more goals in the second half as senior
forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky/Henry Clay) and sophomore
midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored
goals to make it 3-0 in favor of the Generals.

Sophomore midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo
Heights) tallied his team-leading seventh goal of the season with
27:55 gone by off an assist from sophomore forward Bret Grote
(Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). For Grote, it was his
team-leading fifth assist this season.
The Generals (9-2-1, 7-1 ODAC) took a 2-0 lead at the 68:11 mark
as Grote scored off assists from Stoehr and senior forward Andrew
Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay). Stoehr began the play by
sending a cross from the left-corner that Grimes headed right to

The Generals (8-1-1) jumped out to a 4-0 halftime advantage as
senior midfielder David Kodack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville),
junior defender Kevin Bibona (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), sophomore
midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) and
freshman forward Adam Chesbrough (Haverford, Pa./Harriton) all

The Generals jumped on the Maroons early as sophomore midfielder

& Henry on the Liberty Hall Fields on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior defender Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) put the
Generals on the board first as he scored his first goal of the
season off assists from junior defender Sean Hardin (Atlanta,
Ga./The Westminster School) and senior forward Andrew Grimes
(Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay).
Stoehr then gave the Generals (4-1-1, 3-0 ODAC) a 2-0 lead at the
13:55 mark when he scored after junior forward Brad Murphy's
(Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) shot deflected off
the post. Stoehr would tally his second goal of the half 30:08 into
the game to give W&L a 3-0 lead at halftime. Murphy rounded out
the scoring as he notched his second goal of the season off a
corner kick from freshman Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry
Forest) at the 57:28 mark.

ROLF PIRANIAN NOTCHES 200th CAREER VICTORY IN 2-0 WIN AT RANDOLPH-MACON
ASHLAND, Va. -- Washington and Lee men's soccer coach Rolf
Piranian earned his 200th career victory on Saturday afternoon as
the Generals defeated host Randolph-Macon, 2-0.
Piranian, who is in his 26th season as head coach at his alma
mater, claims an all-time record of 200-172-20 (.510). He is the
winningest coach in program history.
Sophomore midfielder Philip Miller (Kingswood, Texas/Kingswood)
scored both goals for the Generals (3-1-1, 2-0 ODAC). Miller also
recorded two goals in a 2-1 victory at Lynchburg on Thursday
afternoon giving him four goals in his last two games.
Miller's first goal came at the 37:00 mark when he beat Yellow
Jacket goalkeeper Mike Matson to give W&L a 1-0 lead at
halftime. Miller tallied his second goal of the match at the 57:48
mark off an assist from sophomore forward Bret Grote (Pittsburgh,
Pa./North Allegheny).
W&L junior goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown
Prep) recorded nine saves to earn his first shutout of the season
and 12th of his career. Matson made three saves for the Yellow

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder Phil Miller (Kingwood,
Texas/Kingwood) scored two goals in leading Washington and Lee to a
2-1 win over Lynchburg in ODAC men's soccer action on Thursday
afternoon.
Miller gave the Generals (2-1-1, 1-0) a 1-0 lead as he scored an
unassisted goal at the 24:34 mark of the first half. Miller then
gave W&L a 2-0 lead as he took a cross from freshman defender
Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) and beat Lynchburg
senior goalie Levi Solmose with 63:29 gone by.
The Hornets (3-4, 1-2) sliced the lead to 2-1 as freshman
midfielder Richard McGruder tallied an unassisted goal at the 76:17
mark, but the Generals would hold on for their first ODAC win of
the season.
Junior goalie Brad Hearn (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) made six saves
in goal for the Generals, while Solmose recorded nine saves for
Lynchburg. W&L outshot the Hornets by a 17-12 count.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it travels
to Randolph-Macon for a 2:00 pm contest with the Yellow
Jackets.

MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 2-1 GAME TO AVERETT
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Averett sophomore forward Ake Soderstrom (Kotka, Finland/Langinkoski) scored in the 108th minute of play to give the Cougars a 2-1 victory over Washington and Lee in men's soccer action Saturday afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields.
The Generals got on the board first as freshman Brian Pirkle
(Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) scored his first collegiate goal
in the 10th minute of action for all the scoring in the first
half.
Averett tied the game just four minutes into the second half as
goalkeeper Chris Barocas (Deltona, Fla./Deltona) converted a
penalty kick after W&L senior midfielder Rick Schnatz
(Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) was called for a penalty. The game
would would stay tied until Soderstrom knocked in a loose ball in
front of the Generals goal for the game-winner.
W&L outshot Averett, 27-6, but failed to convert several
excellent scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Barocas made 10 saves for the Cougars, while junior Brad Hearn
(Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) made four saves in his first start of the
season.
The Generals return to action on Thursday afternoon when the
travel to Lynchburg for a 4:00 pm match.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER EARNS FIRST VICTORY OF 2001 SEASON
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team
earned a tough 2-1 victory over neighborhood rival VMI on Thursday
afternoon on Liberty Hall Fields.
The Generals jumped on the board first as sophomore midfielder
Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored his second
goal of the season just 12:19 into the game. Stoehr took a cross
from sophomore midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood)
and beat goalkeeper John Simmons (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe)
with a shot in the upper right hand corner for the only goal of the
first half.
W&L junior forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian
Brothers Academy) scored the Generals second goal of the afternoon
just 53 seconds into the second half on a breakaway. W&L would
hold the two-goal advantage until freshman midfielder Austin
Williams (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) scored off an assist from junior
midfielder Jonathan Rios (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) to cut the
lead to 2-1.
The W&L defense then packed it in and did not allow another
Keydet goal. W&L senior defender Paul Wallace (Roanoke,
Va./Patrick Henry) made perhaps the biggest play of the game. After
a Williams shot squirted through the legs of goalkeeper Tim Foley
(Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep), Wallace came from the other side
of the box and cleared the ball before it crossed the line.
Foley made three saves for W&L, who returns to action on
Saturday when it hosts Avertt at 3:00 pm.

WASHINGTON, D.C.. -- Washington and Lee senior forward Andrew
Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) scored with less than two
minutes remaining in regulation off an assist from sophomore
forward Bret Grote (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) to force a 2-2
tie with Catholic on Saturday afternoon. It was the first game of
the season for the Generals.
The Cardinals struck first just 2:30 into the game as freshman
Greg Castellani (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley) scored his fourth
goal of the season. Freshman Dan Finn (Alexandria, Va./Bishop
Ireton) made the score 2-0 as he scored off an assist from Gregg
McGuirl (Iselin, NJ/JFK Memorial).
W&L's offense was able to cut into the lead late in the first
half as sophomore midfielder Jacob Stoehr (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo
Heights) scored the Generals first goal of the 2001 season to make
it 2-1 at the half. Senior defender Paul Wallace (Roanoke,
Va./Patrick Henry) assisted on the goal.
W&L goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep)
