HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior midfielder Kevin Molnar (Mendham, N.J. / Delbarton School) scored 5:30 into overtime to lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team past Eastern Mennonite, 2-1, at the EMU Turf Field on Wednesday night.
Molnar scored the game-winning goal for W&L (8-3-1, 3-2) at the 95:30 mark off of a corner kick taken by senior midfielder Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg).
After a scoreless first half, Eastern Mennonite (8-4, 2-3) assumed a 1-0 lead early in the second stanza. Junior midfielder David Shafer received a cross from junior midfielder Dave Drafton and slipped it past senior keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) in the 47th minute.
The Generals netted the equalizer in the 87th minute when sophomore defender Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchanan) headed in the ball off of a corner kick from Kim. The game remained tied until Molnar scored the Blue and White's second goal in overtime to reach the final margin.
For the game, W&L held a 31-11 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Beck played the entire contest in net for the Generals and stopped three shots. Sophomore keeper Cody Martin also played the full contest and made 15 saves for the Royals.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:00 pm contest.
