LEXINGTON, Va. – Roanoke sophomore midfielder Jon-Cody Mactutus scored in the 84th minute to help lift the Roanoke men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
Mactutus scored the game-winner at the 84:53 mark off of a penalty kick after a Roanoke player was pulled down in the box. The Maroons (8-4-1, 3-1) held on for the remaining five minutes of the contest to pull off the win.
W&L (7-3-1, 2-2) and Roanoke went into intermission knotted at 0-0, with the Maroons holding a slim 5-3 edge in shots during the first half.
For the game, Roanoke held an 8-7 advantage in shots, while the Generals held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played all 90 minutes for the Generals and only faced one shot on goal. Senior Nick Tadros also played the entire match in goal for Roanoke and collected two saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm game.
