LANCASTER, Pa. – The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team fell to 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night at Tylus Field.
Junior midfielder Zach Colton scored the game-winning goal for the Diplomats (14-3-4) in the 13th-minute on a free kick that was just outside the box. F&M would hold onto its 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first half.
The Generals (15-5-2) came out attacking in the second half and had multiple chances to even the score, including a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. However, F&M senior keeper Dave Reingold stopped the kick taken by sophomore midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School) and first-year forward Robert Maze gave the Diplomats an insurance goal with 1:31 remaining in the game after receiving a cross from sophomore forward Ryan Fincher.
Franklin & Marshall held an 18-10 shot advantage and a 3-2 edge on corner kicks. Junior keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played the full 90 minutes and made three saves for the Blue and White. Reingold also played the entire game and made two stops for the Diplomats.
With the loss, the Generals end their season with a 15-5-2 overall record. This is the third appearance in the NCAA tournament for W&L and the second straight year it advanced to the second round.
