LYNCHBURG, Va. – Top-seeded Lynchburg College overcame a 1-0 deficit in the final 5:58 to produce a 2-1 win over second-seeded Washington and Lee in the ODAC Men's Soccer Championship game at Shellenberger Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Generals (15-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 14th-minute when sophomore midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School) scored an unassisted tally.
W&L made the advantage stand up until the Hornets (15-1-4) got the equalizer at the 84:02 mark. Junior midfielder Ryan Mayolo set up senior forward Ben Grossfuss, who beat W&L junior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) to level the game at 1-1.
LC then received the game-winner courtesy of an own goal just 2:26 later. The Hornets played a cross in front of the W&L net that the Generals attempted to clear on a one-timed touch. However, the ball connected with the defender with backspin and bounded into the net at the 86:28 mark, giving Lynchburg the win.
LC held a 10-9 advantage in shots, while W&L had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Beck posted four saves for W&L, while sophomore Dylan McLaurin logged four saves for the Hornets. Beck, senior defender Patrick Barry (West Roxbury, Mass. / Roxbury Latin School) and sophomore midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Buchannan) were each named to the all-tournament team for the Generals.
Washington and Lee will now wait to see if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Those selections will be announced on Monday at 1:00 pm.
