LEXINGTON, Va.— Junior midfielder Kevin Molnar (Mendham, N.J. / Delbarton School) scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute to lead the 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team past 14th-ranked Lynchburg, 2-1, in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
With the score tied, 1-1, Molnar tallied the game-winning goal at 62:54. He received a pass in the center of the box from senior forward Geinda Smith (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg), and then Molnar redirected it into the upper corner past Hornet goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin to give the Blue and White the victory.
The Generals (10-2) took an early 1-0 lead, when sophomore midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence) took a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box at the 5:18 mark. Ritch's shot bounced off of the crossbar and rolled just past the goal line.
LC (9-1-2) tied the game, 1-1, when junior Cameron Noonan's free kick sailed into the box and found the head of senior Ben Grossfuss at 24:06. The game remained knotted, 1-1, going into the halftime.
Lynchburg held a 13-6 shot advantage, while W&L led in corner kicks, 5-4. Junior Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves for the Generals. McLaurin also played the full 90 minutes and made two stops.
W&L returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Randolph-Macon at 1:00 pm.
