LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team won its eighth straight game and produced its third consecutive shutout with a 2-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at Watt Field.
The Generals (8-1, 3-0) grabbed the early advantage when junior midfielder Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) took a corner in the ninth minute that went into the back of the net after a tussle in front of the goal.
The W&L defense limited the Tigers (5-4, 0-2) to just four shots in the contest and made the 1-0 advantage hold up until the Generals were able to add an insurance goal in the 89th minute.
Junior midfielder Kevin Molnar (Mendham, N.J. / Delbarton School) was tripped in the box and the Generals were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence) buried the penalty shot to give W&L the 2-0 final margin.
W&L took 23 shots and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played all 90 minutes and made two saves to earn the shutout. Senior Andrew McFarlane also played the full 90 minutes and made 10 saves for the Tigers.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday, when it travels to Guilford for a 7:00 pm start.
