GLASSBORO, N.J. – Sophomore forward Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 80th minute, to help lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over third-ranked Oneonta State on Sunday afternoon in the second day of the Gilmore Alumni Classic.
Oneonta (0-1) got on the board first at the 4:59 mark when senior midfielder Colin Volpe's pass from the left side of the box found senior midfielder Anthony Passiatore, who placed it just over W&L junior goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg). The Generals would even the score just 1:25 later, when Hamryka found the back of the net in the 7th minute, off of assists from sophomore midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence) and sophomore midfielder Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams).
W&L took the lead in the second half at the 57:06 mark, when Ritch won the ball at the goal line and beat Oneonta senior goalkeeper Mike Gaffary. W&L held the lead until 78:09 when senior defender Jake Foley scored off a free kick that was assisted by sophomore midfielder Alejandro Ruiz and senior defender Zachary Southworth. The Blue and White responded with immediate pressure and were awarded a penalty kick at 79:12 after a push in the box. Hamryka took the kick for the Generals and sent the ball into the goal for a 3-2 lead that W&L was able to maintain for the final 10 minutes of play.
Oneonta held an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Beck played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue and White and recorded a pair of saves. Gaffary made three saves for Oneonta.
W&L returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Southern Virginia for a 5:00 pm contest.
