HAVERFORD, Pa. – Seventh-ranked Haverford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 77:03 to post a 2-1 win over 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee in the second-round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Walton Field.
With the victory, Haverford (17-3) has now won 15 consecutive contests and snapped W&L's (16-4-2) nine-game winning streak.
Junior midfielder Will Corkery tallied the first goal of the match for Haverford with 40 seconds remaining in the first half off of a penalty kick following a Washington and Lee foul in the box. The Fords took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Haverford struck again at the 77:03 mark when first-year midfielder Max Krieg beat sophomore goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) to increase the Fords' lead to 2-0.
The Generals responded in the 86th-minute after sophomore midfielder Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) found the back of the net off of a cross from first-year midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian School) to reach the final margin of 2-1.
W&L threatened again with 17 seconds remaining on the clock, but junior goalie Sam Miller stopped junior midfielder David Cohen's (Chesterfield, N.J. / Northern Burlington County Regional) shot to seal the victory for the Fords.
For the game, Haverford held a 16-15 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Beck played the entire match in goal for the Blue and White and recorded three saves. Miller also saw all 90 minutes of action in net for the Fords and made five saves.
With the loss, the Generals end their season with a 16-4-2 overall record. W&L captured the program's fourth ODAC title and made its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
