LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Ben Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla. / Fleming Island) scored two goals to lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at Watt Field.
Bayles tallied the game-winner for W&L (10-3-2, 8-0-1 ODAC) in the 54th-minute off of a penalty kick after EMU (4-11-2, 2-5-2 ODAC) was whistled for a foul in the penalty box.
Bayles struck again when he found the back of the net off of an assist from junior midfielder Mason Billings (Greensboro, N.C. / Page) at the 70:49 mark to increase the Blue and White's lead to 2-0.
Senior defender Cary Carabasi (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) recorded his first goal of the season just 5:33 later when he chipped in a set piece off of a corner kick taken by sophomore midfielder Austin Gilbert (Marshfield, Wis. / Marshfield) to reach the final margin.
For the game, Washington and Lee held a 27-9 advantage in shots and took eight corner kicks as opposed to Eastern Mennonite's zero.
Junior keeper Connor Hayward (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) registered his third win of the season, playing the entire match in goal for the Generals and stopping three shots. W&L also recorded one team save. Sophomore goalie Daniel Nyce (Harrisonburg, Va. / Eastern Mennonite) suffered the loss for the Royals, making 11 saves in 90 minutes of action.
Washington and Lee returns to the field on Wednesday when it travels to Randolph for a 7:00 pm contest.
