LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team tallied four goals in the second half en route to posting a 6-0 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field, with six different Generals scoring.
Junior forward Miles Bent (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) tallied the first goal of the second stanza for W&L (9-3-2, 7-0-1 ODAC) at the 53:36 mark when he scored off of a loose ball in front of the goal. First-year midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Floyd B. Buchannan) then found the back of the net just 1:08 later to increase the Generals' lead to 4-0.
Senior defender Patrick Barry (West Roxbury, Mass. / Roxbury Latin School) tallied the Blue and White's fifth goal in the 61st-minute off of a free kick after Shenandoah (5-7-2, 2-4-2 ODAC) was whistled for a foul. First-year midfielder Andy Dean (Columbia, Tenn. / Columbia Central) scored 8:20 later off of an assist from first-year midfielder Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) to reach the final margin of 6-0.
Sophomore forward Reeves Duggan (Birmingham, Ala. / Indian Springs School) netted the game-winner in the 28th-minute when he headed a shot in the goal off of a cross from junior midfielder David Cohen (Chesterfield, N.J. / Northern Burlington). The Generals struck again when first-year forward Tyler Runge (Manassas, Va. / Forest Park) beat sophomore keeper Keegan Fairchild (Herndon, Va. / Herndon) with a long pass from junior midfielder Ted Hurst (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) with 14:06 remaining in the first half to take the 2-0 lead into intermission.
For the game, W&L took 41 shots as opposed to Shenandoah's four, and held an 18-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) and junior Connor Hayward (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) split time in goal for the Generals, with Hayward making one save. Fairchild saw 71:58 of action for the Hornets, while sophomore goalie Mike Skirkanich (Leesburg, Va. / Tuscarora) played the remaining 18:02. The pair combined for five saves.
W&L returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite for an 11:00 am contest.
