LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Ben Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla. / Fleming Island) scored two goals to lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Guilford in ODAC action on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (6-2-1, 4-0) scored three goals in the opening 16 minutes to put the Quakers (5-4, 2-1) in an early hole. First-year midfielder Dylan Ritch (Mint Hill, N.C. / Independence) tallied the game-winner just 7:14 into the match.
Bayles scored his first goal of the contest off of a penalty kick at the 9:53 mark after the Quakers were whistled for a foul inside the penalty box. He struck again 6:23 later when he found the back of the net to give the Generals a 3-0 lead.
The Blue and White's fourth goal came in the 85th minute when first-year forward Tyler Runge (Manassas, Va. / Forest Park) scored off of first-year midfielder Andy Dean's (Columbia, Tenn. / Columbia Central) deflected shot to reach the final margin.
For the game, W&L outshot Guilford, 34-2, and held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) saw 64:25 in net for the Generals, while junior goalie Connor Hayward (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) played the remaining 25:35 and neither faced a shot. Junior Eric Hayes (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) suffered the loss for the Quakers, playing the entire match in goal and collecting nine saves.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 3:30 pm contest.
